Sacred Legacy Exhibition opens in TimaruOn Friday 31 August Deputy Chief of Misson Dr. David Keegan was guest of honour at the opening of "Sacred Legacy Edward S. Curtis and the American Indian" at the Aigantighe Art Museum in Timaru. This touring exhibition has been provided by the US State Department's Bureau of Education and Administrative Affairs, on loan from Christopher Cardozo Fine Art. Inc. Christopher Cardozo is acknowedged as the world's leading authority on Edward S. Curtis (1868 - 1952) - a man whose wisdom, passion, and strength drove him to devote thirty years to capuring in photographs the nobility and pride of the Native peoples of North America. Sacred Legacy is a fitting testement to the profound beauty, meaning and complexity of Indian life and to Edward S, Curtis. The 60 photgrahaps show Native Americans in their landscape, as portraits and in ceremony. The exhibition of selected photograhs is complemented by a wide variety of Native American historical artifacts. These are on loan from private collections from throughout the South Island. The exhibition was opened by representatives of Arowhenua and hosted by the Friends of Aigantighe. Also attending were people with Native American ancestry. Amoung the guests were the MP for Aoraki Jo Goodhew, Mayor Janie Annear, TDC Councillors and Lady Fiona Elworthy. The exhibition can be seen at the Aigantighe Art Museum until October 2007. |
