Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Susan Collins (R-ME), and John Sununu (R-NH), made a visit to the Antarctic region in January for an educational trip to observe research regarding climate and atmosphere in Antarctica and New Zealand.
The Senate delegation visited Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and toured research facilities and scientific sites. In addition, they took a helicopter tour of the Dry Valleys and Lake Hoare, and flew along the Antarctic ice edge. The senators also visited McMurdo Station and Crary Science Center, among other historic structures. While in New Zealand, they made visits around the Canterbury Plains, Rakaia Gorge, and numerous glaciers from the air. The Senators met with many public officials and scientists throughout the region who are well-versed on this research.
